About this test

The GAD-7 is a short questionnaire developed to screen for generalized anxiety disorder and to measure how severe anxiety symptoms are. Doctors and researchers around the world use it. This page presents the original seven questions and the standard scoring.

What the research says

The GAD-7 was developed and validated at Columbia University and Indiana University School of Medicine. Scores of 5, 10 and 15 mark mild, moderate and severe anxiety, and a score of 10 or more is the usual point at which doctors look further. It screens well for generalized anxiety and also picks up panic, social anxiety and post-traumatic stress, but it cannot tell those apart.
